The Chair in Bahā’ī Studies was established at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in May 1999, on the initiative of Professor Moshe Sharon. In 2021 Professor Meir M. Bar-Asher, a scholar of early Islamic religion specializing in Shi’ism and the Qur’an and its exegesis, was appointed to the Chair. It is the first and only chair in the world dedicated entirely to the study, teaching and research of the Bahā’ī Faith.

The Bahā’ī Faith recognizes the Holy Land as a place of special religious significance, where history, religion and culture intertwine. Preeminent is the city of Acre, where Bahā’u’llāh, the Prophet-founder of the Bahā’ī Faith, composed al-Kitab al-Aqdas (in English translation, The Most Holy Book) and many of his other writings, and where his Shrine stands.

Also of major importance is the city of Haifa, site of the Shrine of the Bāb and its extensive gardens on Mount Carmel, as well as the Bahā’ī World Centre and the Seat of the Universal House of Justice. Read more
